Bumble Bee Goby

Hypogymnogobius xanthozona

Although this fish lives in both fresh and brackish water in the wild, it does better in an aquarium if 1-2 tablespoons of salt are added for every 2 1/2 gallons of water.

These fish also appreciate their water to be on the hard side with a temperature between 22 - 30 C ( 72-84 F ) and have a pH of 7.5 - 8.5.

The Bumblebee goby requires plenty of places to hide in the aquarium, roots, rocks, caves etc which it will defend aggressively.

It has several drawbacks, the main one being the fact that it will not take flake food. It MUST have live or frozen tubifex, daphnia, cyclops, bloodworms etc for food.  It is also territorial, being totally intolerant of any tank mates intruding in its area.

For these reasons it is recommended that this fish be kept in a species tank.
